Addiction Blog Roundup

October 3, 2014 by Lorraine Bockman

Welcome to another Addiction Blog RoundUp. There are some great articles out there this week – enjoy your reading!

Talking to College Students About Alcohol and Drinking

We all know that once we become a parent, even after our kids become adults, we are still parents. Jake Sandino, over at addictionblog.org, is driving that point home this week. He has a great article outlining 6 critical conversations to have with your college students about their drinking. I so agree with him when he says that we have to give individuals all of the information about binge drinking so they can make informed and educated decisions.

A Milestone for SMART Recovery

SMART (Self Management and Recovery Training) Recovery is celebrating their 20th anniversary this week. SMART Recovery is a program that provides support and education through face-to-face meetings and an online community. In his blog post, Bill White discusses some of the history and some of the future challenges of the organization. He also notes that he expects them to become an increasingly important part of the addiction recovery movement. I agree.

Colorado Uses Humor To Highlight Drugged Driving Laws

Over at the NIDA for Teens blog this week they are talking about driving while high on marijuana which of course, remains illegal, even in Colorado. They highlight some new public service announcements by the Colorado Department of Transportation that are visually showing people that marijuana and driving don’t mix. They are a good reminder for teens and adults as well.

Big Bloody Kudos

Mrs. D started one of her blog posts at Living Sober this week with this line: “Sometimes taking booze away is only the first step.” It is hard and she is giving kudos to those who choose sobriety. It takes a lot of work. For those of you that are there, you should be proud.

How To Get Rid of Alcohol Cravings

When you are struggling to maintain your sobriety, one of the things that can be the most difficult early on are the cravings. Beth Burgess has a great 5 step plan this week over at smyls for getting a handle on the craving in the moment. She also has a video with additional suggestions for conquering cravings.

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend!
